There’s something different about racing two strokes. Not just the sound, not just the smell of premix and race fuel but the feeling that comes with it.

This year I’ve been lining up in the Modern 2-Stroke Under 50 class at the UK Evo Championship, and honestly, it’s reminded me why so many people fall back in love with motocross all over again.

The racing has been epic. Good hard racing, proper old school style tracks, and a full line up packed with riders who really enjoy twisting the throttle on a Sunday. And while I’ve managed to put together a lot of top ten race finishes so far this season, I’m yet to crack that overall top 5 but I’m confident it’ll come soon.

But what’s made the championship special isn’t only the racing. The whole series has this proper old school motocross atmosphere that feels harder and harder to find these days. Everywhere you look there are laughing faces in the paddock, people helping each other out, riders borrowing tools, mates ripping into each other on the start line and everyone standing around talking rubbish and creasing up about it.

No one’s trying to make it something it’s not, it’s just a bunch of guys and girls all having a good old race around a field and loving it. Just people who genuinely love riding and racing two strokes. And honestly, there’s nothing quite like racing smokers with your pals.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t go faster or find it easier on a modern day 450 four stroke, and a bigger championships might be glossier….But I’m not sure I’d actually be having more fun.

So for now, the mission stays the same: keep chipping away, keep chasing that top five overall, and enjoy every single gate drop along the way.

Because one thing’s for certain, weekends spent racing two strokes with your mates are weekends well spent.
